Spaghetti Bolognese - Authentic Italian

spaghetti bolognese

Ingredients

  • 500g beef mince
  • 500g fettucine
  • 1 can of tomatoes
  • 1 tomato, diced
  • 2 sticks of celery, diced
  • 1 red onion, diced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 medium carrots, grated
  • Fresh Basil
  • 500ml of Passata sauce
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Italian herbs seasoning

Method

  1. Heat a large pot on medium-high heat
  2. When the pot is hot, add 3 tabelspoons of olive oil
  3. Add in your diced onion, celery and carrots
  4. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring often. Your ingredients will eventually form a paste like texture
  5. Add in your garlic and cook for 2 minutes or until fragrant
  6. Add in your mince, using a wooden spoon to break the meat up.
  7. Season heavily with salt, pepper and Italian seasoning
  8. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring often
  9. Add your passata. Fill the passata bottle with water to rinse all the sauce and add it to your pot
  10. Bring the sauce to boil and then simmer for as long as possible. If too much liquid evaporates, you can add more water. At this point, you can also add a glass of red wine
  11. Add in your canned tomatoes and diced tomatoes and continue to stir and simmer
  12. Taste and adjust your seasonings
  13. Start to cook your pasta in heavily salted boiling water. Cook your pasta to halfway and then add it into your sauce. Keep some of the pasta water to add to the sauce to help it combine
  14. Finish the sauce with chopped basil, serve and enjoy!

Tips for Cooking an Authentic Italian Spaghetti Bolognese

Grating the carrots instead of finely dicing or chopping them will help your carrots cook quicker. I learned this tip for cooking an authentic Italian spaghettit bolognese from my friend's Italian Nonna. Optionally, I have seen other Italians cook spaghettit bolognese with by adding a glass of milk at the end. This gives a creamier texture to the Italian spaghetti bolognese sauce. The longer you cook your spaghetti bolognese, the better it will taste!
